PENINGKATAN LITERASI BAHASA INGGRIS SISWA SMP: SEBUAH TINJAUAN NARATIF TENTANG METODE INOVATIF

This study presents an in-depth narrative review of various innovative approaches to improving English literacy among junior high school students in Indonesia. Challenges in this field are compounded by dynamic curriculum changes and significant gaps in student abilities. Through a systematic literature review, this article descriptively analyzes the effectiveness of two promising main strategies: the storytelling method and activity-based extracurricular programs, such as the "English Day Out" initiative. The analysis results indicate that storytelling, especially when adapting the richness of local folklore, not only enhances text comprehension and vocabulary enrichment but also significantly builds more confident speaking skills. On the other hand, extracurricular activities conducted in non-formal settings have proven effective in fostering intrinsic motivation, building self- confidence, and improving students’ ability to use English in authentic and enjoyable contexts. Furthermore, this study synthesizes other supporting strategies, including morning literacy routines, the use of educational games, and the integration of technology into learning. It is concluded that a holistic, interactive, and student-centered approach is the key to bridging existing literacy gaps. This article recommends that educators proactively integrate these innovative methods into their teaching practices, and that policymakers support their implementation through relevant curriculum development as well as continuous teacher training programs.
