Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of implementing the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model on the explanatory-text writing skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Islam Cendikia Darussalam Tugumulyo in the 2024/2025 academic year. A quasi-experimental approach with a nonequivalent control group design was used on two class groups, each consisting of 30 students. The experimental class was taught using PjBL, while the control class used a conventional approach (lectures and individual assignments). Data were collected through an expert-validated and reliability-tested explanatory-text writing test (r = 0.87). Data analysis employed an independent t-test and Cohen’s d effect-size test. The results show that the experimental class’s post-test average was 84.67 (SD = 6.12), while the control class scored 73.40 (SD = 8.91). The t-test produced t = 5.89 > t table = 1.671 (p < 0.05) with a large effect size (d = 1.48). PjBL effectively improved students’ ability to construct text structure, apply causality, and use scientific language. The project process involving observation of natural phenomena and group presentations encouraged critical and creative thinking. This study recommends PjBL as an alternative Indonesian-language teaching model at the junior high school level, particularly for explanatory texts.
