Perkembangan Penelitian Pragmatik di Indonesia: Tinjauan Atas Tren Dan Temuan Penelitian (2004–2024)

Pragmatics research in Indonesia has undergone significant development over the past two decades. This study aims to map the trends in topics, methodological approaches, and key findings of pragmatics studies written in or about the Indonesian language published between 2004 and 2024. Employing a systematic literature review based on the PRISMA protocol, a total of 178 articles from Sinta-indexed journals and national/international conference proceedings were analysed. The results reveal three dominant clusters: (1) speech act analysis (42%), (2) violations of conversational maxims and implicature (28%), and (3) language politeness analysis (19%). Methodologically, there has been a marked shift since 2018 from purely qualitative-descriptive approaches toward corpus-based and experimental designs. Major findings include the tendency of Indonesian speakers to overuse positive politeness (overdoing) in formal contexts, frequent violations of the maxim of quantity on social media, and the emergence of the new concept of “digital politeness”. Pragmatics research in Indonesia remains dominated by analyses of conventional spoken and written discourse, while cross-cultural pragmatics and clinical pragmatics are still severely underrepresented. This review recommends the development of a national pragmatics corpus and increased experimental research to strengthen Indonesia’s contribution to global pragmatics scholarship.
