Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types, frequency, and causal factors of language errors in narrative essays of eighth-grade students at SMP Sinar Pembangunan 2 Rantau Durian 1, Lempuing Jaya District, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra, and to test effective improvement strategies. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and error analysis, data were obtained from 92 student narrative essays. The results indicated that spelling errors were the most dominant (43.8%), followed by punctuation (23.1%), word choice (15.7%), sentence structure (10.9%), and paragraphing (6.5%). Interference from the Palembang language (Musi dialect) and the habit of writing briefly on social media were the main causes. Improvement strategies based on the text approach (GBA), gradual corrective feedback with bilingual explanations, and a digital narrative project successfully reduced the average error rate from 14.1 to 4.2 per essay (a 70.2% reduction). This study recommends the routine implementation of this strategy and the development of a remedial module based on Palembang language interference for junior high school teachers in central South Sumatra.
